Dog Classes

Full Term Classes:

AKC STAR Puppy:

The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy is an exciting new program designed to get dog owners and their puppies off to a good start. The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program is an incentive program for loving dog owners who have taken the time to take their puppies through a basic training class. (6 weeks)

AKC CGC Classes:

The AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Program is designed to recognize dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. This rapidly growing nationally recognized program stresses responsible dog ownership for owners and basic training and good manners for dogs.  All dogs who pass the 10 step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.  This includes CGC, Community Canine, and Urban Canine. (8 weeks)

Obedience Classes:

Basic Obedience is open to dogs 6 months and older.  It includes 6 weeks of obedience training and household manners. (6 weeks)

Intermediate Obedience is the next level after Basic.  About 40% of this class is done off leash, and we also focus on leash handling techniques. (6 weeks)

Advanced Obedience is all off leash.  We focus on distance commands, advanced commands, and various recall techniques. (8 weeks)

Detection K-9 Series:

This 5 part series in Detection/Nosework is a fun way to learn searching and scenting activities that all dogs and owners can enjoy.  It’s also a nationwide competitive sport, organized and governed by the AKC, UKC, and the USCSS.  You can also utilize training scents, such as bedbugs, narcotics, and mold. (6-8 weeks)

Do More With Your Dog Trick Dog Classes:

The DMWYD Trick Dog Classes come in 5 levels.  There is Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Expert, and Champion.  Tricks are a great option after the completion of Basic Obedience.  Lure and Reward and Shaping are essential techniques.  Options available to join the local SPARK team. (6-8 weeks)

Tracking Dog Classes:

Teach your dog to find lost people and pets with this series of classes.  Classes include  topics such as Scent/Odor Behavior, Intro to Tracking, Track Laying, and Advanced Concepts. (Each class lasts 6 weeks.)

Reactive Dog Classes:

Does your dog bark, growl, lunge, and/or   attempt to bite when another dog or person approaches?  Teach your reactive dog to relax around other dogs and people.  This 6 week class is based, in part, off of Emma Parsons’ book.

Therapy Dog Classes:

Does your dog like to comfort sick or injured people?  He might be a great candidate for this class.  Learn how to take your dog to hospitals, assisted living facilities, and    nursing homes for patient comfort.  (10 weeks)

Mini-Classes Available:

Dogs Behaving Badly—Impulse Control:

This one-session course centers around building a solid sit-with-release in the face of various real-life distractions, in order to give dog guardians a reliable behavior to use for building impulse control. Students work on the proofing process with exercises around the food bowl, door dashing, various people/dog/object/movement distractions, and then finally work on sitting to greet new people.

Walkabout—Loose Leash Walking:

Is taking a walk with your dog less than enjoyable? We’re going to focus on teaching our dogs to walk nicely, but first we need to set them—and you—up for success.  This 4-week class will have you and your best friend marching to the same beat in just one short month!

About Town—Intermediate Level Field Trips:

Having trouble with your pooch in public?  This series of 4– 1 hour and 15 minute classes will teach you and your dog how to behave in public.  With the first session in the classroom and 3 field trips, we will help your dog understand what is expected of it in a public setting.

Pet and Working Dog First Aid and CPR:

Having medical and traumatic issues arise with your working dog or pet is almost a guarantee.  With this 3 session mini-class, you’ll learn the latest procedures and protocols to help you save your dog’s life.  You’ll learn what equipment you need to stock your pet first aid kit with, and how to use it properly.  Pet safety considerations are also discussed in these lectures.
